Lake Tankum is a 10 minute walk from the house. Boat rental, pubs, hotel. Great swimming and wind surfing in summer or ice skating in winter. No power boats allowed! Hiking and bicycling around the lake is available year round, so are tennis courts, mini golf, volley ball and ping pong. Or you could combine language instructions and doing water colors with one of our teachers, who is also a local artist.

Gifhorn, 5 km (3 miles) to he North is a small town in the Southern heathers. An attraction is the famous Mill Museum. Mikhail Gorbachev is the patron of a Russian craft center, where among many other disciplines icon painting is taught. A beautiful Russian Orthodox church all made of wood has been build in recent years to serve the large Russian population here. Also open to the general public for Sunday Services. We can also go food shopping at the farmers markets or one of the colorful Turkish neighborhood stores offering the freshest produce available. This will acquaint you with the extensive Turkish migrant community present in Germany.

Wolfsburg, the home of Volkswagen is 15 km (9 miles) to he north. The new AutoStadt is our new tourist attraction. Wolfsburg offers theaters, a museum of modern art, dance clubs and an excellent fitness/squash center.

Braunschweig (Brunswick), 25 km (17 miles) to the south.
City of Henry the Lion. Many historical buildings and museums worth seeing. Organ concerts are offered in the churches regularly. We can rent a rowing boat, go down the River Oker and look at the backyards of the old patrician houses lining the river. The Magni Quarter is a great place to enjoy the old town, relaxing in one of the many street cafes.

The Harz. 40 km (30 miles) to the south is a hilly, wooded area. Half of it used to belong to the former East Germany. Downhill and cross country skiing is offered in winter, - hiking all year round. Further attractions: A steam engine train, cable car rides, thermal hot springs, and old mines.

We can take one or two day trips to Hanover, Hamburg, Berlin, Potsdam or places of interest in the former East Germany. Parts of it still feel like traveling back in time and look today like West Germany used to in the 50's.Others have been re-build and are ultra modern.
